Florida is an employment-at-will state. Your employer can terminate your employment at any time for a variety of reasons, just as you can quit at any time without consequences. However, the law provides that employees cannot be terminated for certain excluded reasons, including:
- Age: Individuals over the age of 40 cannot be harassed or terminated based solely on their age under the Age Discrimination Employment Act of 1967.
- Pregnancy: You cannot be denied a job, terminated or forced to take time off simply because you are pregnant. Under The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), if you must take time off due to your pregnancy, your employer must treat you as they would if you had a temporary disability.
